The Amazing Power of the Gospel of Jesus Christ

Romans 1:16 “I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God for the salvation of everyone who believes:  first for the Jew, then for the Gentile.” (NIV)

About 80 years ago the world was at war, and it was not going well for the USA.  The Nazis were racing across Europe. The Japanese were in control of much of the Pacific.  It was troubling and an almost hopeless situation.

And yet there was a news reporter named Gabriel Heator who always found something positive to report.  He started all his newscasts with these words: “I’ve got good news for you.”

Well, much better than he reported then, I’ve got really good news for you now.  It’s so good, I can hardly wait to tell you.

The good news is that God’s Son, Jesus Christ, died for our sins, was buried, but He was raised from the dead on the third day, and He is alive now, and He wants to transform your life!

As a result of that you can be forgiven, experience new life, and live forever!  Now, that’s what I call good news. It’s the best good news! How could I not be enthused about it?

It’s good news for you and for me.

In I Corinthians 15 Paul said, “I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you . . . how Christ died for our sins . . . that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day . . .” (I Corinthians 15:1, 3-4)

So notice, Jesus Christ died.  Why? For our sins. Before we get the good news, here is bad news.  We “all have sinned and come short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23), and “the wages of sin is death” (Romans 6:23).

The good news is that He died for us, giving His life, suffering our judgement.  He paid the price for our sinful mistakes. You and I do not have to die that kind of death, dying without hope to face judgement.

Also notice, Jesus Christ was buried.  He really died. He had no life, no breath, no warmth in His body—He was dead, and He was buried like all humans are buried when they die.  He was buried in a borrowed tomb. A great black preacher said, “Why would He want to buy one? He was only going to use it three days!”

And, finally, Jesus Christ arose from the dead.  He came out of the grave to say, “Because I live, you too shall live!  Death is defeated. You will die physically but live eternally!” He is alive and very much at work in the world today changing people like you and me. So where is He if He is alive?  He is alive in every preacher telling the good news.  He is alive in every song of Christian hope. He is alive in His people helping, loving, lifting the world.  The Bible says, “Christ in you . . .”  Paul said, “Christ liveth in me.”
